FOLKLORE JAM:
Presentations on Folklore & Enthonomusicology followed by Jam Session

Join us for the February Folklore Jam! Enjoy presentations by Twalha Abbass and Robert McCormac, followed by an open jam session. All ages. Free, but donations are welcome to support the Folklore and Ethnomusicology Student Associations.

About Twalha:

Twalha Abbass is a PhD student at Indiana University, majoring in Folklore. His primary interest is African stories and storytelling, especially how stories have been used in East Africa—Tanzania and Kenya—to communicate the healing of ecological crises. Twalha will be sharing his short film, A Weaver of Change.

About the Film:

A Weaver of Change is a short film featuring Channa Beth Butcher, a woman who has made her dream come true. She went ahead after graduating with a PhD in Literacy, Culture, and Language Education from Indiana University in 2024. She started a nonprofit organization, E-3 Kenya, through which she, in collaboration with other women in Bloomington and Maasai Mara, Kenya, meets schoolgirls and trains them to sew reusable sanitary napkins. This film follows her journey from Bloomington to Kenya and her first trip of this enormous accomplishment.

About Rob:

Robert McCormac is a PhD student in ethnomusicology at Indiana University, where he studies the bluegrass and old time music of Appalachia. Rob will chat with us about his work and, if we're lucky, he'll play us some tunes.
